Why Decorating with Antiques, Vintage Items, and Family Treasures is So Important
I know the idea can be a hard sell for some clients, but I recommend most rooms have at least one antique, vintage item, or family treasure of sorts. (Don’t stop reading! Hear me out.) Often times clients associate those words with broken, dusty, or kitschy items. But that’s not the way it has to be. It is possible to incorporate antiques and sentimental items in a purposeful and beautiful way that looks elevated. It just takes a trained eye and a little courage.
So why is this so important? Because without items that show us where we’ve been (metaphorically and literally), a room can feel inauthentic very, very easily. Almost like the room is playing dress-up. It’s very pretty but doesn’t feel like a place to recharge and care for ourselves at the end of a long day. To make your house your home, you need to honor your family legacy or the past in some way.
Walking into a room with a beautiful collection of brand new items is all fine and good to look at. But to happily live our lives, we need to bring in something that has a little patina. Something near and dear to our hearts. Otherwise the room will be just a room. It will never be home.
